Among the notable species found here are the various types of dwarf adders such as Bitis cornuta, Bitis peringueyi, Bitis caudalis, Bitis schneideri, and Bitis xeropaga, each with their own unique beauty that is emblematic of Namibia. Other species that are likely to be encountered include the elusive black mamba, puff vipers, African rock pythons, Namaqua chameleons, and various types of cobras, each adding to the impressive list of animals that we could come across during our trip.

Our adventure will take us to explore the highest sand dunes in the world, breathtaking mountains, expansive grasslands, and arid deserts, in search of the species that make Namibia one of the top herpetological destinations in the world. As we venture through the desert in a 4×4 safari vehicle, we will go off the beaten track to spot as many species as possible, providing an unforgettable experience.

Expedition Itinerary

Day 1

Windhoek - Kalahari

Welcome to Namibia! Your guide will pick you up from the airport, and we'll head straight to the stunning Kalahari Desert, where your lodge awaits. With the desert's iconic red sand dunes stretching as far as the eye can see, it's a sight to behold.If time permits, we'll take a late afternoon walk to spot the elusive Cape Cobras. As the sun sets and darkness descends, we'll embark on a short night walk to discover nocturnal species.

Day 2

Kalahari - Keetmanshoop

After breakfast, we'll make our way south to Keetmanshoop. Along the way, we'll explore washways and rocky areas in search of adders, cobras, and lizards. The vast expanse of the Kalahari offers a great opportunity for starscape photography, which we'll do during another night walk after dinner.

Day 3

Keetmanshoop – Rosh Pinah

Today we'll head to Rosh Pinah via Aus, with a focus on finding a variety of reptiles. Our targets include the Desert Mountain Adder, Cape Coral Snake, Beetz’s Tiger Snake, Horned Adder, Black Spitting Cobra, Cape Cobra, Bushmanland Tent Tortoise, Namaqualand Tent Tortoise, Southern Spiny Agama, Richtersveld Gecko, and several lizard species.

Day 4

Rosh Pinah - Oranjemund

We'll have an early start to search for the Namaqua Dwarf Adder, which is only found in this specific location. After finding this elusive snake, we'll spend most of the day searching for snakes, lizards, and geckos. As night falls, we'll embark on another night walk to discover nocturnal species.

Day 5

Oranjemund – Luderitz

Our main target for today is the Many-horned Adder, found on the Luderitz Peninsula. We'll also keep our eyes peeled for the black morph of the Western Rock Skink, Dwarf Beaked Snake, Karoo, and Namib Sand Snakes. As night falls, we'll search for Namib web-footed, Spotted Barking, and Namib Giant Ground Geckos, with a chance to spot the elusive Namaqua Chameleon.

Day 6 - 7

Luderitz - Aus

Today we'll have a short drive to Aus, with the main target being the Nama Padloper. Bushmanland Tent Tortoise also call this habitat home, while Knoebel’s Agama can also be found here. Over the next two days, we'll search for a variety of reptiles, including the Beetz’s Tiger Snake, Bug-eyed House Snake, Cape Coral Snake, Cape Cobra, Horned Adder, Namibian Wolf Snake, Montane Gecko, Festive Gecko, and Jordon’s Girdled Lizard.

Day 8

Aus - Sossusvlei

We'll set out before dawn to reach the park at first light and make the most of the cooler morning hours for herping. Our primary goal is to find the striking red variation of the Peringuey's Adder. Sossusvlei and Deadvlei offer fantastic photographic opportunities, and for those who are up for it, scaling some of the highest dunes in the world is a popular challenge.

Day 9 - 10

Sossusvlei - Swakopmund

We'll spend a full day driving and searching for reptiles en route to the coast. Depending on our arrival time, we may head straight to the dune belt between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay to look for the paler form of the Peringuey's Adder, as well as Horned Adders, Namib Sand Snakes, Dwarf Beaked Snakes, Namaqua Chameleons, Namib Web-footed Geckos, Sand-diving Lizards, and more. After dinner, we'll go on a night walk to search for Koch's and Common Barking Geckos, Giant Ground Geckos, Horned Adders, and other species. Depending on our findings from the previous day, we may head back to the dune belt or head towards the Kuiseb Delta in search of our sixth and final adder species, the Puff Adder. We'll go on another night walk after dinner.

Day 11

Swakopmund - Brandberg area

From Swakopmund, we'll make our way to Namibia's largest mountain. Here, we'll spend the day searching for reptiles and continue our search at night. Possible species we may encounter include Western Giant Plated Lizards, Namibian Rock Agamas, Large Scaled Geckos, Kunene Shield Cobras, and Zebra Spitting Cobras.

Day 12

Brandberg - Erongo

We'll depart from Brandberg and head to the impressive Erongo Mountains, where we'll strive to observe as many species as possible. Our final night walk may yield new species for our list, such as Marbled Rubber Frogs, Western Tiger Snakes, Leopard Tortoises, African Flat Geckos, Brown House Snakes, and African Rock Pythons.

Day 13

Erongo - Waterberg

The lush and vibrant Waterberg area is home to several interesting species, such as the Black Mamba, Striped Skaapsteker, Puff Adder, and Zebra Cobra. If it has recently rained or we experience rain, we have a good chance of finding fossorial species. The endemic Waterberg Gecko is a must-see species in this area. At night, we may come across various owl species and small nocturnal mammals, while during the day, we might spot the black morph Dwarf Mongoose.

Day 14

Waterberg - Windhoek

Depending on our arrival time, we'll spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding hills in search of reptiles, including the Puff Adder, Western Barred Spitting Cobra, Anchieta's Cobra, South African Rock Python, Namibia Rock Agama, Cryptic Gecko, and Bitis sp.
